![]() I no longer have a need for them, but I also know that I don’t need to get rid of them. I don’t identify as a civil engineer anymore but for a long time, it was a big part of my identity, a part that I was immeasurably proud of. They have been sitting in storage for a number of years since I left the profession. Now he hardest part of decluttering books for me is letting go of the books and papers that I had acquired during my training as a civil engineer. And I imagine that I will slowly discard a few more books before I am content with what is left. I did not count the number but I can imagine there were roughly 40 books in those bags. In my last book clean out, I ended up with two full paper shopping bags after the task of decluttering books. That paved the way to get rid of other books that were less important to me but that I had held onto over the years. Only recently have I passed these books along to a friend. Or travel books for places that I had been to or dreamed of traveling to.īut all of the books I owned that were written by my favorite author during my college years were very hard to let go of. Like the books I bought because of a hobby I had taken up and then given up on. Not initially, since I had some obvious bad purchases. When I started minimizing my possessions, decluttering books was one of the hardest tasks. Although if I’m being completely honest, I never used to feel too much guilt over those purchases either.īut, at least books were contributing to my education of life and shaping my views and knowledge. But I tended to feel less guilty about buying books than other material items like clothing or jewelry. And in every new house or apartment, I had to find a place for all of my books.Īnd I had spent so much time, energy, and money acquiring them. I toted those books with me from place to place. It wasn’t uncommon for me to go and spend a few hours at a bookstore, simply out of boredom, and end up buying a few books to add to the collection. ![]() I used to own a lot of books books that were bought, maybe read, and then put back on a shelf so that I could convey to anyone who saw my bookshelves that I was a well-read person. Personally, I love a good book. I love the weight of it, the smell, the feel.Īt a time when content is increasingly electronic, it’s nice to take a break from my phone or computer and read something that was written with some paper and ink. ![]()
